Despite ongoing progress and social change, violence against children is still a problem in the world and in Lithuania. Violent experiences in children cause early symptoms of post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, which over time can lead to more serious negative consequences - persistent depression, destructive thoughts, delinquent behavior, harmful habits, poor learning and quality of life. There is still a lack of effective early non-medical care for children who have experienced violence or trauma in Lithuania.

The aim of the project is to reduce early symptoms in schoolchildren who have experienced violence or trauma using advanced, research based CBITS (Cognitive Intervention for Trauma in Schools) and Bounce Back methodologies.

It is planned:
  • To train at least 88 psychologists and social pedagogues from small and medium-sized Lithuanian municipalities for long-term work with CBITS and Bounce Back methodologies;
  • Identify children with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and/or depression;
  • Adapt CBITS, Bounce Back methodologies and provide free professional support to schoolchildren through interventions. Also work with their parents/guardians and teachers.
The application of methodologies helps to achieve the goals:
1) to reduce the early symptoms (post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety) that occur after violence and/or traumatic experiences;
2) to prevent the exacerbation of symptoms in the future;
3) increase peer and parental support for a child who has experienced violence and/or traumatic experiences.

Project benefit:
  • At least 88 specialists trained for long-term work with CBITS and Bounce Back methodologies from Varėna d., Pasvalys d., Joniškis d., Jonava d., Ukmergė d., Tauragė d., Mažeikiai d., Silute d., Kretinga d., Taurage d., Kelmė d., Alytus city municipalities;
  • Reduction of post-traumatic stress, depression, anxiety symptoms in children who participated in the interventions, improved their quality of life, mental health, avoided further harmful consequences;
